Canadian agriculture faces a devastating shock to its very core after Donald Trump's Administration carried out its threats to place 25 percent tariffs on exports from Canada. This has left producers and those who help the agricultural market scrambling, looking for immediate solutions to what is akin to shutting down the border along the 49th parallel.
Most Canadians do not understand that the idea of the family farm has drifted far from the reality of the agricultural sector. Most food grown here is designed purely for export.
Canada's Beef accounts for 75 percent of all exports to the USA, making up over fifty percent of our Country's Herd Population. Chicken exports add up to 99% of all Canada's chicken exports, for a grand total of 3.2K tons in 2023. Pork stands at 22 percent, and that is mainly the shipping of ISO Wieners for fattening and finishing and export from the USA. Aquaculture represents a total of 92.8 billion in trade.
Grain producers are also in trouble. In 2023, grain exports to the USA totaled 439.6 billion. This is a staggering figure considering that the USA only represents 4.2 percent of the global population.
Tariffs, of course, are not the answer, and if anyone was still under any illusion that this whole exercise was about fentanyl, they need to pay much more attention to what economic stagnation to sequester a country into the union looks like.
Canada's response to this action by imposing retaliatory tariffs is shortsighted and the wrong move. The only people indeed affected by tariffs are consumers. Canada needs to move quickly to enter other markets by selling further abroad and rebuilding our primary and secondary industry and manufacturing to a global masterpiece.
Negotiating with the American administration now seems futile. Our solutions are here and beyond North America. Until then, Canadian consumers need to vigorously seek out as many Canadian solutions as possible for their products and dinner table.
